Remember last month? "It's a computer - it WILL
break". I talked
about having a list of hardware and settings available for your
technician in the event of a computer failure.
As part of the whole, 'it will break'
issue, of course we all know we have to have backups. If you
are in business, your livelihood may well depend on a failsafe
backup routine. In many cases, it would be absolutely catastrophic
if you had to reconstruct your business records and sales
information. If you are a home user, you might have many, many years
of irreplaceable memories of images and other information.
There are many acceptable ways of doing backups
(more on that later this month), but the one thing all of them have
in common is that you need to KNOW they are actually working!
We have seen to many times where a client has a great backup routine
in place, and then they when they NEED the backups, they find out
they are unusable.
To verify your backup routine, don't just depend
on the backup log or the fact that it looks like your files are
being copied. Actually go to the backups occasionally and try to
restore a few of the files you think are being backed up. In
particular, try one or two of the critical information files that
you count on every day.
In this day of digital information storage, we
have to be more proactive to insure we have copies our valuable
information. Take the time now, it may save your memories or
your business (and your sanity)!
